Fakaalofa lahi atu and happy Vagahau Niue / Niue language week!
We had a positive start to Term Four, with our ākonga and staff returning to school refreshed and focused! In addition to this, I received the external Special Character report for our kura (school) which acknowledged the “impressive progress that has been made since the last review” and affirmed our school as being “a place where ākonga are well known and the caring and nurturing environment provides extensive opportunities for them to achieve their personal best and to grow their faith journey”. A heartfelt thanks goes out to our Marcellin community - Board, staff, ākonga and whānau, for all your contributions to our Wairua o te Whānau / Family Spirit. Click here to access the full report.
At the end of Term Three, we farewelled Ms. Melissa Bell to begin her new role as ORRS leader and Manutaki / dean at St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College. This term, we welcomed Dr Opeloge Ah Sam who joins our Marcellin whānau as Assistant HOF Creative Arts and Teacher in Charge of Music. We also welcomed back Ms Theresa Hyde-Hills who was on sabbatical leave, and Ms Cayla Parkinson who was on maternity leave.
On 12th October, we came together in prayer with the Sipapa Vaelua aiga to give thanks to God for the life of Tusigaigoa, a past ākonga of our kura who sadly passed away a year ago.
This week our seniors are completing the practice digital exams in preparation for the official NZQA examinations in three weeks time. Our Year 9 and 10 ākonga are diligently revising for their progress ‘Check Week’ assessments that begin this week. Please read through the conditions of assessment outlined in the section below to ensure your tamariki has a clear understanding of the expectations and assessment protocols. Thank you for your ongoing support by encouraging your tamariki / child(ren) to attend school everyday and ensuring they make the most of every learning opportunity. This includes being on time to every class, ready to learn with the correct gear / uniform.
Key ‘End of Year’ celebrations begin next week, starting with our Sports Prizegiving on Aho Ua / Tuesday 24th October followed by our Thanksgiving Mass and Senior Prizegiving on 1st and 2nd November respectively. More details will be emailed closer to the date, and posted on our school’s social media sites.
As we begin the new term, we thank our God for the blessings of this week. We pray for our Mother Mary’s intercessions and prayers, that we continue to follow in the way of Mary with our aroaro/presence and care for others, and that we see each other as God sees us, with unconditional love and support.

Celebrating Ākonga Success

Congratulations - Sofia Duran
Congratulations to Sofia Duran who is part of 'SOULFUL' Dance Group. Their dance group participated the well-known World Supremacy Battlegrounds competition in Hamilton this August and their group won 1st place ( with only 6 crews and most of them the first time for competing) and qualified to go to Sydney to compete further in September!
Sofia went to Sydney to compete with international hip hop teams at the WSB (World Supremacy Battleground) and her dance crew 'SOULFUL' from Otahuhu DDF dance studio won 3rd place in their category! What an achievement! Well done!

A special mention to Temaleti Tupou who also made it to the SUSO Solo Vocal Finals Showcase. Here are key reminders to ensure our school is a safe physical and emotional environment for our Marcellin whānau and the wider community:
- Marcellin College is a Smokefree school at all times - smoking, vaping including e-cigarettes on the school grounds is ILLEGAL and not permitted anywhere at Marcellin College and in public transport (buses, trains or ferries). For more details, refer to our school Smokefree Policy
- Bullying is harmful behaviour that is not acceptable at Marcellin College. This includes verbal, physical, social bullying and discrimination. For more details, refer to our school Bullying Policy and Harassment Policy.

Attendance Targets
A reminder of our attendance targets which are in line with the Ministry of Education attendance targets for 2024:
70% ākonga attending school regularly (attending more than 90%)
6% ākonga who are moderately absent (attending more than 70% up to 80%)
5% ākonga who are chronically absent (attending 70% or less)
Please continue to inform us promptly if your child/ren will be absent from school.
The direct link between attendance and academic achievement is well documented. The aim of Marcellin College is to have all ākonga attendance at 85% or above.
It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our ākonga are at school every day and on time.
