Curriculum

Marcellin College is a ‘High Achieving’ school. We provide a Christ-centred, whānau environment with a wide range of authentic learning experiences that nurtures the gifts and talents of every ākonga, and stretches them to achieve their personal excellence.

Our responsive and inclusive curriculum covers the eight learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum, and with the support of our quality kaiako, in partnership with whānau, provides ākonga with innovative opportunities to ‘Seek the Best’!

Year 7 – 10 Ako

The Junior ako programme offers a variety of courses and learning experiences. The courses have either a specific learning area focus or a connected learning focus, where learning is designed around the integration of two curriculum areas to achieve deeper learning and ignite ākonga curiosity and love of work.

All Year 7 and 8 ākonga will study:

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • Languages – Te Reo Māori and Pacific Languages
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Hospitality and Material Industries

All Year 9 ākonga will study: 

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Commerce – Business Studies
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • Languages – Te Reo Māori and Pacific Languages
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Fashion & Design and Material Industries

All Year 10 ākonga will study: 

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Sciences

Ākonga will also choose FOUR options (two per semester) from:

  • Commerce – Business Studies
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Fashion & Design, Hospitality and Material Industries/Whakairo
  • Languages – Gagana Samoa and Lea Faka Tonga are full year courses.

Year 11 – 13 Ako

Our senior ākonga consistently reach their personal excellence and achieve strong academic NCEA results.

The Senior ako programme consists of five courses that work towards gaining the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualification.   Most courses have a specific learning area focus and there are also courses that provide deeper, connected learning opportunities.

All Year 11 ākonga will study: 

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Mathematics

Ākonga will also choose TWO options from:

  • Commerce – Accounting
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • Health and Physical Education – Health and Sport Science
  • Languages – Gagana Samoa and Lea Faka Tonga
  • Social Sciences – Geography, History and Social Studies
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Fashion & Design, Hospitality and Material Industries

All Year 12 ākonga will study: 

  • Religious Education

Ākonga will also choose FOUR options from:

  • Commerce – Accounting
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • Health and Physical Education – Health, Physical Education Leadership and Sport Science
  • Mathematics
  • Science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • Social Sciences – Geography and History.
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Fashion & Design, and Material Industries

All Year 13 ākonga will study: 

  • Religious Education

Ākonga will also choose FOUR options from:

  • Commerce – Accounting
  • Creative Arts – Art, Dance, Drama, Music
  • English – English and Media Studies
  • Health and Physical Education – Health, Physical Education Leadership and Sport Science
  • Mathematics – Calculus, Mathematics and Statistics
  • Science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • Social Sciences – Geography, History, Social Studies and Tourism
  • Technology –  Design, Digital Technology, Fashion & Design, and Material Industries
