EOTC – Education outside the classroom
It is our strong belief that experiences outside the school reinforce learning by enabling students to make connections between what they have learnt in the classroom and the world beyond the classroom. EOTC experiences give students opportunities to demonstrate the essential knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and key competencies identified in the National Curriculum. For this reason we proudly support all types of EOTC.
The EOTC programme is important to Marcellin College, and aims to provide:
- Opportunities beyond the classroom to support learning in all areas of the curriculum
- Opportunities for students to discover, enjoy, learn and develop in outdoor, leisure and recreational contexts
- Safe learning experiences across a variety of contexts and environments.
Curriculum related EOTC events
All faculties offer a wide variety of trips that have significant relevance to their curriculum. The following are an example of trips and events that faculties offer.
- The English Faculty go to the pop-up globe theatre, debating competitions, and reader-writer festivals.
- The Maths Faculty compete in national Mathex competitions
- The Science Faculty visit Māngere mountain and Ambury farm, Arataki Activity Centre, Auckland zoo, and the foreshore seabed on the Northshore.
- Geography takes trips to Waihi, and the Auckland CBD.
- The Health and Physical Education Faculty take students to the Athletic Championship games and sport leadership workshops.
- The Religiuos Education Faculty run year level retreats in local parrish centres. Students compete in the annual Auckland Catholic Schools Pompallier Shield event.
- The Business Studies classes compete in the Young Enterprise Scheme.
- The Creative Arts Raculty frequent many drama, dance and musical performances, as well as local art museums. The Dance department have recently entered Stand up Stand out, GenX, YouDance, and the Mega Schools Hiphop dance competition.
- Ara / Careers and Pathways take many trips to Auckland University, Polytechnics, and other career related events
Non-related EOTC events
Not all events and activities have a direct correlation to the curriculum but rather offers experiences that increase student engagement, fitness and wellbeing.
Sports plays a major role on offering a variety of weekly team sport activities. The Director of Sport looks for every opportunity to get students interested in sport. Currently these are the types of sport being offered
- Central zone netball, basketball, tag rugby, volleyball
- Touch rugby
- Cross Country
- Waka Ama
- Rock climbing
There are four other events that the school participates in. Two events are on a bi-annual cycle. The whole school production and Polyfest
Every two years we have a strong cultural representation at this major Auckland event. Our students have performed on the Tongan stage, Samoan stage, and Diversity stage winning many titles for their participation. Our recent Filipino/Indian dance troupes have done exceedingly well on the diversity stage with their bollywood style performances. It is hoped that in the very near future we will compete on the Maori stage.
Whole school production
On alternate years we offer many theatrical opportunities where students can operation sound and lighting, be a backstage crew member, costume design, makeup, props, stage set construction or participate on stage as a dancer, singer or actor. A typical production will involve over 100 students with many of these students working behind the scenes, helping to coordinate and put together these spectacular productions. The shows are performed at the Mangere Arts Centre where opportunities in the use a of fully operational theatre gives the students that real live show performance experience.
The Year 9 students go to an adventure camp where they sleep in bunk rooms, or camp outside. They participate in activities like high and low ropes course, abseiling, raft building, rock climbing and team building activities. This is offered at the end of the year after the senior students leave.
Prefect leadership camp
Prefects go on camp for three days with the senior leadership team to bond as a cohesive group of young leaders, learn about their responsibilities and roles, sharing in their faith and selecting their committee positions. The camp tests their own beliefs and offers opportunities to find their true talents.
